Networking Events for Pre-Law in NYC

Are you looking to get connected with the vibrant law and tech scene in New York City? Interested in networking opportunities or exploring the latest trends at the intersection of technology and the legal world?

Here is a list of platforms/events to get you started.

United Nations Open-ended Working Group on Information and Communications Technologies:

  • WHAT? This group is responsible for developing global rules and principles to guide how countries behave responsibly in the digital space. Its work includes setting standards to ensure the safe use of technology, encouraging nations to share cybersecurity initiatives, and establishing regular UN-led meetings to foster dialogue among countries. The group also studies current and potential threats, such as data breaches, to identify ways for nations to collaborate on prevention. Additionally, it explores how international laws apply to technology use and works on building trust and skills in cybersecurity worldwide. The goal is to create a safer and more cooperative digital environment.

  • WHEN? Twice a year, once during the summer and once during the winter. The group is slotted to meet for 11 substantive sessions in New York City, through the end of 2025. The 9th one just took place two weeks ago.

  • WHERE? The United Nations Headquarters for the main substantive event, but side sessions take place in various locations, ranging from the Microsoft Headquarters in NYC to other smaller office buildings.

  • HOW? To attend, you must obtain a United Nations security badge. You can register for a pass to attend the meeting at the following link: https://indico.un.org/event/1013902/registrations/.

    • TIP💡 You must write an Accreditation request letter to register. There is a template letter on the Indico website that you could use as the basis for yours.

    • TIP💡 The deadline to register is typically 3-4 weeks before the deadline.

United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR). Subscribing to their newsletter (@unidir@un.org) will allow you stay up to date with their latest events on cybersecurity, technology, global politics, and international policy.

Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY):

  • WHAT? AABANY is a not-for-profit organization that advocates for the participation of Asian Americans in the legal profession. They host a conference every fall for all members to participate in. However, the event is technically open to non-members, with a fee.

  • HOW? This year's 2024 Fall conference took place on October 12. It looks like previous years have ranged between mid-late September and early-mid October. I recommend just keeping an eye on their website and checking for announcements on their home page. Same-day registration is possible- it’s what I did when I attended.

  • WHO? If you are AAPI and pre-law, I highly encourage attending at least once. It’s a great way to engage with legal professionals who are established in their fields, learn career pathways, and find potential mentors!

Check out this 2024 Conference program - it covered topics that lawyers are talking about now, ranging from cybersecurity to person-centered justice! What better way to learn about these topics outside of a classroom setting than in a room full of practicing lawyers!
